REEL 2023

Synopsis

Demo Reel 2023 (the 10th reel) showcases Ry’s Creative Director and Designer credentials. On his first nine Demo Reels, Ryan DeCarlo established himself as a skilled motion graphic artist, who could hold his own in the freelance circuit, often hired alongside industry-leading creative directors, artists, and production studios. Rather than defend his experience editing a montage of corporate commercials, theatrical/broadcast work, and typical trends, he edits together a reel that echoes more as digital fine art—revealing a fragment of personal styles, imagination, and craftsmanship. That unknowingly has influenced other creative directors, artists, and studios. This new reel and website are teasers of what’s to come from this new Creative Director. Enjoy!

TCC Rebrand

Client:

Description:

The Content Collective was in need of a fresh look. Once we refined their brand and logo, we developed a motion graphic template and a full 3D intro. The goal was to reveal their rebrand in TCC's 2021 Sizzle Reel. Concept: The small spheres that form their logo represent each of their clients. The gear scene represents their operations (work ethic), their mind (creativity) and a refresh to their old logo (their original logo portrayed bulky gears.) Lastly, the final scene is an explosive reveal of unity, modernism, and shine. Welcoming a fresh new look for all their new presentations, sizzles, and online content. Surprisingly, this project won 11 media awards: Award of Distinction/Silver, Communicator Awards. 1 Silver, MUSE Creative Awards. 1 Gold, Vega Awards. 1 Gold, NYX Awards. 1 Platinum, Viddy Awards. 1 Platinum, Hermes Creative Awards. 1 Platinum, 1 Gold, AVA Digital Awards. 1 Platinum, 1 Golds MarCom Awards. 1 Platinum, DotComm Awards.

Omnicom Media Group: Halloween Promo

Client:

Description:

While I'm not a big fan of 80's slasher films, the rest of my team at Omnicom was and I saw this as an opportunity for some fun. To celebrate Halloween, we produced a promo to honor this classic genre and the infamous jump scare and dolly zoom techniques while trying to maintain a PG viewership. Concept: To keep the promo PG, I referenced numerous children's books and found a handful of rhythms. We figured this would also be the easiest way to build a story in a short amount of time quickly. Additionally, the montage of quick cuts tells the story of a girl in the woods running from the Kreen. Why else would a laptop be in the woods?! This montage helped set up the dolly zoom suspense too. The centerpiece was a laptop because we realized everyone had one common connection - working off their OMG laptops. Initially, Kreen's costume wasn't working on set, so we pivoted to 3D and concentrated heavily on timing and audio. Due to time and budget, we also simplified the video into one dolly zoom. Techniques: In addition to the jump scare technique, we wanted to play with the dolly zoom. Location: We visited Motion Hub, a workspace I created in Upstate, NY, and found a perfect 80's style backdrop. We set up our equipment, turned on the fog machine, and worked throughout the night.

MODEFIT

MODEFIT

Client:

Description:

Every iconic brand has an origin story. A clothing line that may dominate today’s department stores may have started as a small business run out of a fledgling fashion designer’s living room. While launching a clothing line is challenging, thanks to eCommerce and online marketing, it just might be possible to turn a brand that began in a small online store into a clothing brand that’s beloved nationwide. You never know. MODEFIT is a boutique clothing line from Los Angeles. It is a line of hoodies, t-shirts, and shorts that flatteringly accents someone’s curves. They targeted a young demographic in LA, who tend to be style-conscious and receptive to online marketing and word of mouth. We started the brand awareness with a soft launch, using Instagram as our leading platform, along with Instagram influences which were happy to promote new fashion trends in exchange for products. We kept production simple and low budget. We shot at Motion Hub in an old car garage, rented a fog machine and mannequin, and borrowed weights from the local Golds Gym. We consolidated 5 hours of footage into a :30-second spot but leveraged all the content into still imagery and 3-5 second clips. I attached my 20mm prime lens to a Sony a6300 on a FLYCAM 3000 Handheld Video Camera STABILIZER outputting 4k 30fps to Log3. Edited in Adobe Premiere Pro, color graded in Davinci, and Adobe After Effects for motion graphics.

Pegasus Short Film

Client:

Description:

Best Experimental at Los Angeles Cinema Festival of Holywood and Official Selection at The Block Film Festival I created a short film utilizing skills and techniques I've acquired working as a designer and simply watching movies. 95% of my time is spent designing in Photoshop and AfterEffects but rarely behind the lens of a camera. I bought a Digital Camera (Sony 6300) and some production equipment from B&H. Pegasus is my first attempt at using my new equipment. My goal was to create a short film that was creepy, mysterious, and cool. I'm making four films under one storyline. Each film will be classified as a different genre to help me learn new techniques. Each film will have its own style while incorporating its predecessor. Produced at Motion Hub

Description:

"Come Together" is a piece that examines the details of our difference in an elegant, abstract way. The objects represent myriad cultures, countries practices. We come together in one united symbol of unity, a ring, a wreath of peace and good tidings. During a time of isolation and remote working, we asked ourselves, "How can we show unity in a global company when everyone is physically separated?" We realized everyone had one common connection - working off their OMG laptops. Also, from a technical perspective, we experimented with the idea of merging stop-motion and 3D animation together, seamlessly. This also worked with the concept of "unity" by unifying two different techniques. Surprisingly, this project won 8 media awards: 1 Silver, MUSE Creative Awards. 1 Gold, Vega Awards. 1 Gold, NYX Awards. 1 Platinum, Viddy Awards. 1 Platinum, Hermes Creative Awards. 1 Gold, AVA Digital Awards. 1 Golds MarCom Awards. 1 Platinum, DotComm Awards.
